The 6th Annual New Jersey Meadowlands Festival of Birding!
On September 12 & 13, folks of all experience levels from around the state and region will come together to share their interest and knowledge of birds in a variety of venues in the Meadowlands. The Meadowlands contains over 8,000 acres of valuable wetland habitat, and is home to over 280 bird species. As in past years, the Festival is comprised of two days of activities including walks, eco-cruises, paddles, indoor workshops and presentations led by some of the area’s most accomplished and respected birders. Breakfast and lunch will be provided on Saturday, and our keynote speech will be a discussion by Dr. Robert DeCandido about his study of bird migration from the top of the Empire State Building.
Dr. DeCandido has been studying the night migration of birds from the Observation Deck of the Empire State Building. He is trying to determine the approximate number of birds that pass over Manhattan each autumn, and if the lights of the building have negative effects on any of them. During the day, Bob is engaged in the first intensive study of urban kestrels in North America, basing his work on Manhattan Island where there are now about 30 breeding pairs. Further afield, he has also conducted studies of migrating birds of prey in Malaysia, Israel, Nepal, Thailand, Turkey and Spain. Currently he is self-employed in New York City as a leader of bird walks, an environmental consultant, teacher and photographer. He has more than twenty scientific papers published in journals such as Biological Conservation, The Wilson Bulletin and The Journal of Raptor Research. Popular articles about his work have appeared in Natural History magazine and Birder's World.
Admission costs $40.00 (an awesome bargain) for people 18 and over. Interested children 10-17 may attend for free (with adult supervision), and children 9 and under are not permitted to attend – sorry! The ticket price includes all activities for the entire weekend, plus the two meals on Saturday. Saturday’s events are based at the Meadowlands Environment Center in Lyndhurst, and Sunday is comprised solely of field trips (you meet your guides at the individual sites). The Festival of Birding is organized by Hackensack Riverkeeper and NJ Audubon, and is sponsored by the NJ Meadowlands Commission.
Please click HERE to view and print the (11 x 17) Festival brochure – it contains important detailed information, so please read it and then register online! Once you read the brochure, you may also register by calling Hackensack Riverkeeper at 201-968-0808 or by mailing in the registration coupon found in the brochure.
Happy Birding!
