This group is comprised of residents from the Township who receive specialized training in the various areas of emergency management and response.
The purpose of the CERT program is to train ordinary citizens to care for themselves, their family, their neighbors and finally, their community, in case of an emergency. These volunteers will help to improve the response and preparedness of the community and the emergency services.
The CERT training and education experience forms a crucial link between the community and the professional emergency response teams.
All CERT members attend a basic training class which is held at the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute in Mahwah, NJ.
Instruction is received in the following areas:
- Disaster Preparedness
- Fire Suppression
- Disaster Medical Operations
- Light Search & Rescue
- Terrorism Awareness
- Disaster Psychology

There are a total of 8 classes which are held during the evening. At the completion of the program, basic CERT safety equipment will be issued to each successful participant. CERT members receive additional training each year in the Township such as CPR, traffic/accident safety, mass casualty management, and sheltering operations.
CERT training is a great way to feel more empowered to protect yourself, your family and potentially your community.
