We have 252 girls in 27 troops encouraged and led by over 50 adult volunteers. Girl Scouting begins in kindergarten with our Daisy Girl Scouts and continues through high school. RVGS has enjoyed participating in our River Vale Octoberfest. Last years’ coat drive held at the Octoberfest was a huge success. Our town-wide program includes our always popular Halloween party. This costume extravaganza is open to all children and is run by RVGS as a community service. There are games and a fun night for all. We also run a themed Sweetheart Dance in February that is open to non Girl Scouts. Our Spring Banquet is a Girl Scouts Only special event. We celebrate the season with dinner and dance the night away. Girl Scouts has been well represented for the last few years in our River Vale Memorial Day Parade. Troops work hard making banners and having a great time marching. Community service is an important part of Girl Scouting. Our individual troops hold food and clothing collections throughout the year. Many people are helped through their efforts and the girls learn the value of caring and sharing. Our troops enjoy arts and crafts, exploring nature, cooking and traveling. Recent Volunteer Efforts As part of the requirements for the Girl Scout Silver Award, River Vale Troop 478 has completed a Silver Award Project addressing a need of the community. The girls have chosen to work together on the renovation of the River Vale Food Pantry. Each girl has had a specific leadership role within the project, and together they have made significant contributions to the Food Pantry Renovation including purchase and installation of new shelving, refurbishing existing shelving, painting the interior, removing expired items from the shelves, organization of dry and canned items, and the purchase and installation of new blinds. The girls also solicited the donation of paint and supplies from Marsala Hardware and new carpet and installation from Gordon Carpet. This group of 8 girls has been involved in scouting for over 8 years, and will be completing their Silver Award in March 2008. The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest recognition a Girl Scout in seventh through ninth grade can earn. The Award consists of six steps including the final project, a leadership component and a career component.
