May We Never Forget Veteran's Corner As Commander of River Vale American Legion Post 477 I have several thoughts to share with you. For one, to quote the New Jersey Legion publication "The Blue Star Banner has been reactivated." This program began in WWI and was used extensively in WWII. The program recognizes families who have members in any branch of the military service. (For those too young to remember, you will see the banner in the window in the front window of Mrs. Ryan's house in the movie Saving Private Ryan.) The American Legion is seeking to rekindle this tradition and a spirit of pride in our military men and women. If you have a member of your family serving in the military, the banner can be obtained through the American Legion. As a result of the extensive flying of the American Flag at home, on cars, and hand-held, in this outstanding display of patriotism, there are a very large number of damaged flags which need to be retired and ceremonially disposed of by burning. SAVE THESE TATTERED FLAGS for proper American Flag Ceremonies by River Vale American Legion Post 477, on or about June 14 (Flag Day) at the Veterans Memorial Park. Closer to that date a collection point will be advertised. You are, of course, most welcome to attend the Ceremony. As in past years, Post 477 will be selling Poppies from May 1
until Memorial Day, at the 4-Corners business area and throughout
town. All money collected will be donated to a worthy cause --
none of the funds will remain for use within our Post. Thank you
for your generosity in the past, and look for us in May so we can
continue together to fund this worthwhile work. |
