RIVER VALE LAUNCHES UNMANNED AERIAL SYSTEMS PROGRAM
Chief William C. Giordano announced that the River Vale Police Department (RVPD) has acquired an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for use in emergency operations, crime scene investigations, and public safety initiatives.
The UAV is a Rapidly Deployed Aerial Surveillance System (RDASS) HD by Leptron Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), Inc. It is equipped with a high definition camera as well as a Forward Looking InfraRed (FLIR) camera, which is a thermographic camera that senses infrared radiation.
Chief Giordano stated, “The use of unmanned aerial vehicles is an up-and-coming technology that the River Vale Police Department has adapted for law enforcement use. Our Unmanned Aircraft System program was established at no cost to the taxpayers.” Instead, the Chief said, related expenses were funded through monies available as a result of civil forfeiture actions taken against defendants who were involved in criminal activity.
For this venture, Chief Giordano researched a variety of UAS vendors and ultimately selected Archangel UAV Technologies, LLC, for the procurement of the UAV and the implementation of the UAS program. The Chief noted that the UAV obtained by the RVPD is a professional-grade aerial vehicle with capabilities above and beyond consumer-grade platforms.
River Vale Police Officers assigned to the UAV team are undergoing comprehensive training to conform to all Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations. This training includes both classroom and practical flight training, which is being instructed by Archangel UAV Technologies.
Chief Giordano indicated that RVPD’s UAV, designated “Angel 1,” will be operational as of September 21, 2017.
