American Legion / Veterans News

Any resident who is interested in joining is welcome to attend a meeting and we will go over the benefits of and qualifications required to join The American Legion.

The American Legion is a veterans organization organized to assist all veterans in need.

We would appreciate being informed when a River Vale resident goes into service.

Some of the activities that the Post has engaged in are, assisting the Teaneck Armory Family Assistance Center, Bergen Tracers (a homeless veterans assistance center in Hackensack), visiting the local Veterans home in Paramus, and the local food bank. Upcoming ceremonies are the celebration of Veterans Day on Nov 11th and the Pearl Harbor Remembrance on Dec.7th.

NEW JERSEY $3,000 STATE INCOME TAX EXEMPTION
All Veterans (as of now, the definition of a “veteran” is anyone with a DD-214 that shows Honorable Discharge) who are residents of New Jersey can get a $3,000 personal tax deduction from their income on STATE taxes for 2017. In order to get this deduction, the Veteran needs to submit a copy of their DD-214 and a form to the NJ Division of Taxation. The below link has all of the info and the form.
Please note that (1) the website says that it may take up to 3 months for this to be processed, so don’t wait until April 15th to submit it; and (2)you have to print the form, sign it, and then scan it as a pdf in order to submit it on line. If you submit it online, then you will get 3 emails: confirmation that you submitted it; confirmation Taxation received it; and then a claim number from Taxation.

Veteran's Corner
For one, to quote the New Jersey Legion publication "The Blue Star Banner has been reactivated." This program began in WWI and was used extensively in WWII. The program recognizes families who have members in any branch of the military service.

The American Legion is seeking to rekindle this tradition and a spirit of pride in our military men and women. If you have a member of your family serving in the military, the banner can be obtained through the American Legion.

As a result of the extensive flying of the American Flag at home, on cars, and hand-held, in this outstanding display of patriotism, there are a very large number of damaged flags which need to be retired and ceremonially disposed of by burning. SAVE THESE TATTERED FLAGS for proper American Flag Ceremonies by River Vale American Legion Post 477, on or about June 14 (Flag Day) at the Veterans Memorial Park. Closer to that date a collection point will be advertised. You are, of course, most welcome to attend the Ceremony.
